OEM or Generic Cartridges?

I don’t normally blog outright about PrintCountry.com, but they just released a new press release that I thought was interesting. Apparently, customer satisfaction with OEM and generic printer ink cartridges vary wildly across brands. With a good chunk of data backing up their claims (over 7,000 surveys), I’d take these results to be pretty darn reliable.

Printer Ink Cartridges Still Thrown Away

According to InfoTrends, less than half of all printer ink cartridges are being recycled or reused. Some believe that this trend is due to the lack of encouragement to reach environmental goals by the OEM companies.

printer ink cartridge recycling

This is due to the fact that cartridge reuse could be a loss in profits for the printer companies. With a reluctance coming from the manufacturers themselves, the likelihood of the consumers discovering and carrying out recycling on their own is slim to none.

As I sit here in the sweltering heat, I can’t help but be a little peeved at the lack of environmental concern from these big companies. Can’t they feel the temperature rising, quite literally? Don’t they see the floods all over the world? Hm, I wonder what’s causing that? Whatever could it be? A normal fluctuation in global climate, perhaps? I highly doubt it.

Individual responsibility is so important. Do this planet a favor and recycle your printer ink cartridges. Or, you can use a refill kit to get another use out of that cartridge. Whatever you do , just don’t throw them in the trash. Go to your local office supply store and you should find a bin specifically for recycling printer ink cartridges. Or, you can always use the PrintCountry Recycling Program.

Forbidden Love: When the All-In-One Met Kitty

For some purely light-hearted fun, here’s a cute video of a cat grooming and generally loving up on an HP All-in-One printer. That looks a lot like my printer, actually.

Anyway, I thought it was cute. I wish I could have a cat. Too bad I’m allergic to them. Although, I don’t know if all of that fur in the printer ink cartridges or near the print heads would be so good for the printer function. Ah, whatever. That’s the price you pay for cute pets.

Kodak Turns Bad Printing Into A Competition

Just found this interesting nugget today. Kodak is offering up a free Kodak EasyShare 5300 All-in-One printer to the lucky (or unlucky?) person with the most watched video on their website by the end of the submission month.

You see, in order to enter, you need to film and upload a video of your printer behaving badly. They want to see frustration, tears and anger! Okay, not really. But your video does have to be pretty interesting because which ever one is watched the most wins you a free printer.

This fun contest is an all an attempt to showcase just how easy the Kodak EasyShare is to use. It can even be dubbed as a pleasure to use. Well, we’ll have to see about that.

Let’s just hope Kodak doesn’t have to put their money where their mouth is and end up with a video of a Kodak printer malfunctioning on the website. Interesting thought, eh?

This is how a printer shouldn’t sound

In case anyone was wondering what to look for in regards to printer problems, here is a big one: if your printer sounds or behaves in anyway similar to the one in the video below, you might just have a problem.

Hear that grinding, throw your hands over your ears sound? Yeah, that’s never a good sign. And just for good measure, this isn’t a good sign, either:

Sorry for the poor image quality. I took it with my camera phone. Yes, that is my printer. And yes, it does have that orange exclamation point of doom lit proudly. Wish me luck in fixing it!
