Counterfeit Money at Garage Sales!
If you’re thinking of organizing a garage sale in order to make some extra cash out of the things that may be accumulating dust in your attic but some other person might have some practical use for, then be wary of counterfeit bills. There are reports that there are people who are using counterfeit bills to make purchases at garage sales, where there are fewer possibilities for the fraudulent act to be discovered right away.
A news report by John Lauritsen on wcco.com shared the experience of a resident who discovered that about half of the money she made out of a garage sale that she put up was composed of fake twenty dollar bills. The bills were reportedly hard to detect; they were printed on paper that felt remarkably similar to actual paper bills. They were also crumpled just right, where one would easily believe that it had been cooped up in someone’s jeans pocket for quite some time.
It was only when the resident looked closely at two $20 bills she received during the sale that she suspected that the bills were fake. They reportedly had matching squiggly lines and had the same serial number, something that will never happen if the bills had been real. She took the bills to the police, who then confirmed her suspicions.
The proliferation of counterfeit bills is nothing new – we have in fact featured it a bunch of times on this site. It was, however, the first time that the Brooklyn Center Police Department ever encountered someone hitting a garage sale with fake bills. They are speculating that the economic situation may be driving more and more people over the edge with illegal schemes.
The resident who got hit with counterfeit money then did her bit for her neighbors by driving around and warning other people who put up garage sales regarding her experience. For those who have plans of having a garage sale, one can actually protect one’s self by using a counterfeit detector pen, which can be purchased for a few dollars from office supply stores.
