Tricky Ways Your Printer Might Be Ripping You Off

You might not realize it but there are several ways your printer could be wasting your time, money and effort. Learning some of the tricks of the trade can help you better save on all three of those and leave you a much more satisfied customer. Watch out for these suspicious signs.

• Printer With a Great Price/ Ink More Precious Than Gold: Be wary of that inexpensive printer you’ve had your eye on, the hidden costs could be more than you bargained for. Many printer companies use this trick to pull in new customers and then spring the hefty ink/toner price on them when the sample cartridge is up. How do you know if this one’s popped up? Divide the cost of the cartridge by the page yield (how many pages the cartridge prints according the manufactures guides). This is usually available on the company’s website. The average cost per page shouldn’t be over 5 cents per page. It’s also a good plan to look out for printer cartridges that don’t have a very high yield. Look for cartridges that offer yields above 250 or toner above 2000 pages.

• Paper Specifications: If it asks for a special type of paper to get the job done odds are you’re getting ripped off and having to buy expensive paper just to print off items as simple as a grocery list! If your printer doesn’t print well on regular paper it’ll waste you a lot of money.

• Half-hearted Paper Trays: If the tray looks flimsy odds are it is. One way some companies save money off the cost of a printer is to spend less time and money on making a solid paper tray. Often these trays drop printed paper onto blank sheets, snap off or bend under weight or even drop your documents onto the floor. Invest in a printer with a solid looking paper tray instead.
