Will Merging Computers and Printers Help HP?
Long considered one of the leading resources in the world regarding computer technology, Hewlett-Packard recently announced a decision to merge their computer and printer departments, hoping that by combining resources, they can cut back on their spending. This merging will allow for both computer and printer production to still be moving forward, although only time will tell how successful this merging may be. This has happened once before in HP history. These two divisions were merged in 2005, although this merger only stayed active for a few months. When a new head took over HP, these departments were separated once more.
It has been speculated that the growth in the printer industry is slowing down, as technology develops to the point where paper is no longer as necessary as it once was. This could result in a beneficial union for HP, as the merging of the departments could yield a new product which blends the computer and printer. One such product performs a task close to this, for the Photosmart printers with Touchsmart technology can browse and use various web applications. It denotes a potential for great new products to start to come out of HP itself.
Companies all over the world are pushing divisions together to try and help conserve their costs. The state of the economy is still poor and as a result, we may see other companies begin to take the same approach. The biggest benefit from this merging of departments, however, is the fact that the communication should be improved between the computers and printers, which could lead to great new products being put forth from HP.
