County Information Services Gets Rid of Printers
The County Information Services Department in Allegan County, Michigan, took having a “paperless” office environment to a whole new meaning. The office just got rid of all – and yes, it is ALL – their printers.
Beginning in 2005, the office started converting documents to electronic form. The reason why the office took that rather drastic step towards becoming a paperless office stems from the fact that the county will reportedly run out of storage space in three to five years. So, instead of reaching a point where documents in boxes will line the hallways of the office, they decided to turn to PDFs and other electronic formats as well as Facebook and Twitter.
The move may also help them work within the $1M general budget shortfall this year. We just hope that the appropriate course of action – meaning that all these electronic images were backed up – have been done to ensure that no files get “lost in translation”.
