HP and University of Michigan Team Up to Restore Old Books
Those who are dealing with the frustration of being unable to get hold of certain book titles on account of their being out of print may yet have some hope. HP and the University of Michigan have struck up a partnership that will give rare and out-of-print books a brand new existence.
In a previous post we have already shared with you the new service that will make all that possible – HP BookPrep. The partnership will hopefully lead to the availability of more than half a million rare and hard-to-find books.
The partnership between the two entities will definitely be beneficial to the end users – book lovers. For one, having access to the University of Michigan Library collection, ranked as among the top ten academic research libraries in North America and home to more than 7 million volumes that span thousands of years of civilization, will provide HP with extensive material to offer along with its services.
On the other hand, having HP as a partner will help bring back to print the efforts of the University of Michigan at coming up with electronic copies of rare literary works by scanning them. While raw scanning is an ongoing process at the University library – as in other libraries across America – these raw scans cannot be readily printed out. HP’s BookPrep will take care of cleaning up these raw scans and turning these pages into books that can be printed out once more, albeit at a more efficient and economic way, using the concept of print-on-demand.
After all, and I have often mentioned this, there is a different kind of nostalgia and satisfaction in reading an actual printed book. A few minutes of reading a book online, on a PC or an e-book reader can be rather taxing to the eyes – at least in my case. However, we do recognize the fact that simply printing indiscriminately is something that is not sustainable as far as caring for the environment is concerned. Having a service such as BookPrep is, in a way, like being able to get the best of both worlds.
