What You Need to Know About Cartridge Compatibility
As crazy as it sounds, there are some people in the world who insist on using other brand cartridges on their printers. They just jam the cartridge into the printer and try, in vain, to print their document only to find out that it doesn’t work. Wonder why? Here’s a basic look at how and why considering cartridge compatibility is important before buying new ink or toner cartridges.
For one thing, the difference in cartridge design is the most obvious thing when looking at cartridge compatibility. Cartridges are created differently, depending on the brand and model. It’s easy to think about it, really – it’s the same as putting the right battery model into your cell phone. So if you’ve been wondering why your bigger yet cheaper cartridge doesn’t fit into your expensive and smaller printer, then wonder no more. It won’t fit because your cheaper cartridge wasn’t made for your printer. So you can forget about stuffing that incompatible Dell cartridge into your expensive Lexmark laser printer. It just won’t work.
When you do manage to find a cartridge with a relatively same design as your printer’s, you would have to consider the chip embedded into the cartridge itself. This chip enables the operation of a cartridge and would determine if it’s plugged in to the right printer. Hence, each cartridge is “keyed” differently, so don’t expect your Dell cartridge to work with your Lexmark. While the design may be similar, chances are that your computer won’t recognize the cartridge. Worse, it can actually damage the printer, and fixing this would be a lot more expensive than buying the correct cartridge for your printer.
That said, it’s highly recommended to use the correct cartridge in order to prevent compatibility issues. Not only will it be safer, but you can also be assured that your printer won’t flake out on you because of an incompatible and utterly unworkable cartridge. Check reputable ink shops that offer compatible cartridges and ask the staff to assist you in finding the right cartridges for your printer.
