Save the Environment, Buy New Equipment

For those of us who have been around for quite a while, it can be really easy to get attached to some of the things that we have accumulated over the years. There is the refrigerator that was a hand-me-down from who-knows-where and stayed with you through college; or the TV that was practically your best friend when you went through your couch potato phase. Then there is that clunky old desktop and printer that stayed with you through thick and thin, helping you churn out those A’s.

All these moments of sentimentality are cute, but they may not be prudent. It will also not be the best line of thought towards being an environmentally aware citizen of the world.

new desktopYes, sentimental value aside, it might just be time to give up that old Whirlpool in the kitchen in favor of newer models that are more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. The higher your electricity costs, the larger carbon footprint you leave behind; so it may be time to keep your memories, well, remembered as such.

So what can you do? We mentioned evaluating your fridge. You can also try and take a look at what your air conditioning system is like, especially if you have been staying in your house for quite some time. Instead of keeping your fancy SUV, you may want to switch to a hybrid.

Of course, this post will not be here if there is nothing about your PC and printer. First up, if it’s just you at home, you may want to simply keep a sturdy laptop instead of a desktop system with all its associated peripherals, especially one that’s already been around for a while. If you do still absolutely need a desktop, then consider the newer models that are more energy efficient, with the flat screen monitors. As far as printer use goes, if your household is the kind with multiple users and with various needs, then it may be best to switch to a multifunction printer with wi-fi capabilities that anyone in the house with a laptop can share.

Remember, every little thing you do counts. These little things, when added up, can become a huge step towards saving the environment.
