Did the Motorola Droid Bomb Out?
With all the hullaballoo that preceded Motorola Droid’s actual release, one would have expected throngs of people lining up bright and early at Verizon Wireless stores on Friday.
Apparently, that was not the case. It looked like not too many people were willing to brave the chilly November morning just to be one of the first to get a Droid.
But Verizon is reportedly saying hey, so there were no lines, so what? Once again, this initial reaction is probably a comparison between the Droid and the iPhone, putting emphasis even further into the fact that the two smart phones are being pitted against each other.
Long lines would be a grand way of making an entrance, but that is not exactly the be-all and end-all of a product. It will not necessary spell success, nor will it become a harbinger of things to come. Just because there were long lines to get hold of an Apple iPhone does not mean that any other smart phone that does not create that much hysteria is doomed.
Verizon reportedly prefers to see a slow and yet steady influx of interested consumers — something that is constant, manageable, and most probably sustainable. People, though, were not only interested in the Motorola Droid. There were also people who were more interested in the other “star” of the day, the HTC Android Eris.
The feedback regarding the Droid, though, has been positive thus far. Customers are reportedly impressed by the sharp display and cool applications.

There is a phone worth $600. It’s the Nokia N900. Even though I only paid $450 for it…heh. Droid rocks though, got one of em the day it came out. So far we love the phone, but I still think the N900 will be better.
Just to add, there were plenty of ways to pre-order this phone and it was well publicized that Verizon and Motorola had plenty of stock upon release. I don’t know if that is a positive thing or a negative thing. Some people say that the IPhone benefited from the increased media because of the low inventory and that this built demand?
Who knows? I guess we will all see over time. I personally don’t see this as a Motorola Droid vs Iphone fight. I see it as an Android vs. Iphone battle. Well be seeing ALOT more Android devices compared to one Iphone w/ different versions.
I was at Verizon the day the Droid came out. My local store had people calling in to “reserve” them. I LOVE it. I am a Mac user, but AT&T’s network just isn’t as good as Verizon. Got rid of my BB Storm. Glad to have a keyboard, although the virtual keyboard is very intuitive. Great device. Good amount of apps available – more than enough to do what I need.

2 reasons:
1) best buys and verizon stores are everywhere almost guaranteeing no long lines
2) the thing is too damn expensive for us established VZW customers who are not eligible for the 199 price…I would have even bought it for 300 for 400, but 600? No phone on earth is worth 600 imho
