Verizon Sends iPhone to Island of Misfit Toys

It seems like AT&T’s reaction to the Verizon map only fueled the advertising war fire. Verizon Wireless has launched a new ad that pokes fun at AT&T’s service and, by extension, the iPhone.

The story still involves the controversial blandly colored map, but starts out rather differently. The commercial is based on the Rankin/Bass TV animated classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and takes us to the imaginary Island of Misfit Toys. It is here that defective toys are exiled, and suddenly, the island’s population increases by one. You can guess which nifty device suddenly shows up — you’re right, the iPhone.

The island’s other inhabitants are, of course, surprised and are wondering why a gadget that can do so much, including download apps and browse the web, ends up suffering the same fate. It is at this juncture that the now famous map of AT&T’s 3G coverage shows up.

The moral of the story is, once again, that inadequate network coverage can ruin the reputation of even the best of gadgets.

Verizon, according to the rumor mill, may just be able to carry the iPhone as well in the third quarter of 2010. Apple is reportedly developing what is being called as the “worldmode” iPhone, a phone that is capable of running on any network.

The research firm OTR Global released a report that hinted that the hybrid iPhone will be using a new chip from Qualcomm. This new chip will give the iPhone the ability to function in both CDMA and GSM networks. The rumored release date, which is the third quarter of next year, also coincides with the time that Apple’s exclusivity contract with AT&T will expire.

There is also speculation that the new iPhone will be smaller than the current models.
