If It Prints, I'll Let You Know

Google’s gift this holiday season to the air-traveler set is free Wi-Fi at the airports, at least for those airports who have yet to offer Wi-Fi for free. The gesture has placed Google under a rather favorable light over the past few days. During these rather financially challenging times, we cannot help but get excited about things that we do not need to pay for.

We wonder, though, how effective this free access could be over the holidays considering the number of travelers who will undoubtedly descend upon airports in droves. Aside from the fact that one will probably find looking for a place to sit a challenge in itself, it will probably not take long for the airwaves to become clogged.

I did a bit of traveling over the weekend and thankfully spent time at an airport that offered free Wi-Fi access. It was, indeed, a great convenience. I was able to get a bit of research and writing done, and spared the airline a mouthful after my flight was delayed for four whole hours.

In the age of netbooks and smartphones, Wi-Fi is fast becoming a necessity. Even shopping malls are jumping in on the craze and are starting to offer free connectivity as well. It seems like consumers, in their drive to always stay connected, will flock to places that will allow them to do just that – and for free.

Once again, though, nothing is really for free. The service that you will get is most probably commensurate to what you are paying for. Since you are not paying for anything and neither is the person behind you, beside you and in front of you, then be prepared to fall in line. If you are not prepared to do that, though, then it will probably be good to have paid Internet access available as well.
