Droid Eris better smartphone than Droid
The release of the Android, the phone from Motorola Droid on sale by Verizon since November 6th has already encountered problems with companies wanting to use it. The phone is great for companies and people using Gmail, POP or IMAP based e-mails. The issues stem from security issues that are very present once starting the phone. The security of the phone is easily compromised, and this makes them completely unusable for most companies. The other major issue is the lack of management software, so larger companies wanting to deploy the phones for a large network are out of luck.
Exchange, an email service that is used by companies is also lacking in support. The basic user who has access to Exchange will need to pay a $45 payment plan to access the Exchange servers versus the $30 payment plan on the Motorola Droid, upgrading themselves to a corporate account. Even after paying the $15 difference, there are still users who cannot either receive or send email, or they can receive but not send. Other issues related to the Droid Eris are applications not working correctly when programmed for the Eris, contacts not transferring, Audio and camera functions not working properly, and other minor issues. One major complaint from consumers is that the Google Maps application doesn’t work right until settings that are already set are reset to get the phone to work. There is a plan to have an OTA update released on December 11th 2009 to fix all known issues.
Although the phone has its flaws, the phone does get some things right over the competitors’ phones. The multi-touch screen and sensitivity are done well, even better than the original Droids’ functions and features. The phone is better than some of the competitors’ features like the touch keyboard is as good as the Iphone but the trackball is inaccurate. The Eris is a good choice if you don’t like the Iphone, Blackberry or similar phones, and although there are flaws, as stated earlier there is an update in the works.
