Comparing the Netbook and the Smart Phone
We came across a rather interesting feature on CNET — Brooke Cothers pits the Netbook against a smart phone, instead of its bulkier but faster counterpart, the notebook.
While Crothers has admitted to not owning a Netbook, he seems to have a clear grasp of the advantages of a Netbook. But then again, maybe we are a little biased as we happen to own one.
Okay, so the Netbook is not all that great; that is, if you compare it performance-wise against the notebook. For one, the keyboards are a real tight squeeze – especially with the model that we have; Palm’s fold-away keyboard for the PDA has even bigger keys than our Netbook. Having gone traveling for a week over the weekend and deciding to bring only the Netbook along, I had to contend with the diminutive screen that ultimately gives me a headache. Researching and writing for 4 straight hours on a Netbook can be rather challenging.
However, the Netbook was never destined to become a work horse. We do agree that it makes more sense to view the machine as something designed as a go-between PC for people on the go. And the closest gadget that fits that same description is the smart phone.
And if we compare the Netbook with a smart phone such as the Apple iPhone, then its good traits will certainly shine through. You may not exactly be able to place the thing in your pocket, but as far as mobile computing is concerned, you can do so much more with a Netbook. And even if we talk of keyboards and screens, one will most likely think of Netbook screens and keyboards as gigantic when placed beside an iPhone.
Long story short, if your goal is to be more productive even while on the go, then you might do well with getting yourself a Netbook on top of your more reliable laptop or desktop instead of just a smart phone.
