Amazon Kindle: Christmas 2009 Gift of the Year

With the Barnes & Noble e-book reader Nook out of commission over the holidays, the Kindle became quite a success story for Christmas. Amazon.com revealed that among all the products it offered over the holidays, the Amazon Kindle became “the most gifted item in Amazon’s history.”

Amazon-KindleAmazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos was quoted as saying: “We are grateful to our customers for making Kindle the most gifted item ever in our history.”

Another plus for the Kindle: apparently, this is also the first time in the history of the company that more Kindle books were sold over actual physical books.

Highest sales for Amazon.com happened on December 14. Customers reportedly ordered more than 9.5 million items worldwide. After the Kindle, the next widely bought items are the 8GB iPod Touch and the Garmin Nuvi 260W GPS.

Other top sellers included Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007, a product that figured in a patent infringement loss for Microsoft; Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 and Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac (Home and Student Edition); unlocked Nokia 5800 XpressMusic; Plantronics 510 Bluetooth Headset; and the BlackBerry Bold 9700 phone.
