Apple App Store Hits 100,000 Mark!

Apple reportedly recently announced that it has surpassed the 100,000 mark in as far as number of applications in its Apple App Store is concerned. Now what exactly do we make out of that? PC World’s JR Raphael has an interesting look into this number of apps game.

iPhone appsThis announcement definitely dwarfs the ten thousand applications collection of The Android Market, which will back up the release that is currently being watched by many – the release of the Motorola Droid by week’s end.

But taking a cue from Raphael, how much does this seeming huge gap between the two applications providers really affect the performance of the iPhone and the Droid? An app tracking and sharing service called AppsFire came to a rather surprising conclusion: the App Store’s rather large collection seems to be only just that – a collection. This is because of the tens of thousands of apps to choose from, only a relative handful actually makes it into users’ iPhones.

An analysis was made by AppsFire on the hundred thousand-something app collection of the Apple App Store. At the thousandth application, there are reportedly an estimated 1.76 percent of users that have the program installed. Add another thousand and one might never even see the number of active installs.

When we come to think of it, how many applications do you really need to stuff into your iPhone anyway? For each type of application, there are also times when there are multiple apps to choose from that can do practically the same things. So if we look at it from that perspective – ten thousand applications will seem to be more than enough to serve users who might choose the Motorola Droid.

The Droid has already been touted as “one of the first serious iPhone contenders”. Whether it will manage to live up to that press release remains to be seen – but it does look like the number of applications available to back it up will not really matter as much.
