Avatar Reigns Supreme Despite Blizzard!
There may have been a blizzard in the East Coast over the weekend, but that certainly did not deter movie goers from seeing Avatar, at least based on the movie’s performance on its opening weekend. There were drops seen in sales in theaters in New York and Baltimore on Sunday, but that did not seem to affect the movie’s over-all performance in the box office.
It may now be one of the most expensive films ever made, but it earned an estimated $232.2 million from North America as well as 106 foreign markets. Avatar is now said to be “provisionally” the “9th biggest opening of all time.”
Its tale, while highly fictional, is rather timely: it tells the story of a former Marine who was sent from Earth to “infiltrate” an alien race that consists of tall blue people in an effort to save his polluted planet. It may just be the perfect story to complement the ongoing issue of climate change.
