Nokia vs. Apple: Infringement Case Over iPhone

It seems like a battle of the giants is set to ensue, as Nokia filed an infringement suit against Apple at Federal District Court in Delaware on Thursday. The complaint, in essence, was lodged against Apple because it has allegedly been taking a free ride and using technologies that had already been patented by Nokia without giving the latter the appropriate compensation that the company thinks it should get.

iPhoneThere is no intent to be biased in any way, although this writer admits to being a Nokia user for a little over ten years now. Since Apple has only been around about a couple of years, it is not entirely unimaginable, even to those like us who are not exactly privy to the ins and outs of the various innovations in wireless technology, to believe that Apple may indeed be using technologies for which other companies hold intellectual property rights for.

On the other hand, we have Nokia, which has long proven itself as an industry leader and innovator in as far as wireless communications are concerned. The company, along with such pioneers as Ericsson and Qualcomm, is one of the key patent holders in mobile technologies. It invests quite a hefty sum of money into research and innovation and has built up quite an impressive intellectual property portfolio, to the tune of over 10,000 patent families. To date, Nokia has reportedly entered into license agreements with approximately 40 companies, extending even further the ability of Nokia’s innovations to reach and be used by consumers. CCS Insight research director Ben Wood, quoted by a feature from Reuters, said that it was practically “inconceivable” to come up with a mobile phone and not use technologies that have been patented by Nokia.

Ten Nokia patents are included in the complaint, encompassing wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption, and these are reportedly all infringed by all the Apple iPhone models shipped since the device was introduced in 2007. Analysts are foreseeing that this suit may cost Apple up to a billion dollars if it loses to Nokia.

I agree with the law suit, i hate apple products they have been known to use other technologies without permission, then when they are sued they just settle outside of court.

judging from Apple’s creativity and breaktrhoughs, it would be very possible that Apple is able to invent those features. It’s just happen that Nokia got there first and have the rest of the producers (and ulitmately consumers) to pay.

Sometime patent is a legitimate unproductive monopoly.

so, i work for at&t and in my opinion iphone is the greatest phone that anyone’s ever came out with.. i think nokia is just mad that apple and at&t joined and created a product that has hurt their business.. to me, there’s not really much of a case against apple.. that’s just business.. that’s what every single company is out to do.. so really, what have they done wrong ? nothing. nokia just needs to get over it.
