VoIP Provider Releases Smartphone Apps for Christmas
While most people head off for home this holiday season, there are those who can only think of home – this tiny menagerie of grad students included. It can be rather difficult to simply pick up your bags and head on home when home is almost 8,000 miles away and tickets cost an arm and a leg. So, as in the past couple of Christmases, we will have to be content with celebrating Christmas Eve with the family through a phone call. Sniff.
This is exactly the kind of scenario that can be addressed by the latest offering to be unveiled by VoIP provider Vonage. The company unveiled on Tuesday apps for the iPhone, iPod Touch and BlackBerry, just in time for the holidays.
So what exactly can these apps do that got us all interested? Apparently, the apps will give users the ability to call-all-you-can internationally to 60 countries. While the apps themselves can be downloaded for free – they are available now through iTunes and Vonage’s mobile Web site – an unlimited call plan costs $24.99 a month. For someone who makes frequent international calls, however, $24.99 is a good deal.
The downloads for the iPhone and the iPod Touch will give users the ability to make unlimited Vonage Mobile calls in the United States using Wi-Fi without necessarily expending allocated cell phone minutes. The app for the iPhone and the Blackberry will also run on one’s existing mobile carrier, but that will consume cell phone minutes.
There will be no change in cell phone numbers and calls can be dialed directly from an existing address book, sans cumbersome call cards and easy-to-forget pin codes.
There are only a certain number of countries where calls can be made directly to mobile phones; calls made to other countries will have to be made to landlines.

If one is already subscribed to Vonage World, it can easily be extended to any cell phone (regular and smart phones) without subscribing to Vonage Mobile or Vonage World Mobile, thus saving $14.99 per month. Cellular minutes are not used if one’s cell phone carrier is AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile (free unlimited calls to and from favorite numbers) or Sprint/Nextel (free incoming calls). Just install a Call Bridge/Call Back switch on the Vonage World line and place unlimited air time and long distance calls to 60 countries and even share with family, friends, associates, etc. Also the use of the Vonage World line is not restricted to USA residents only. Land lines and some cell phones in the 60 countries can also place the same unlimited calls.
