BEP Pays Employees to Return Printers!

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing has come up with an idea to cut costs in the long term — buy back printers that it has issued to its employees.

There are more than 500 senior employees in the Bureau who have been issued individual printers in the interest of information security. The printers are used to print sensitive documents, allegedly pertaining to personnel issues that should not end up in the wrong hands.

The ultimate objective of this effort is understandable enough and is entirely reasonable — giving up that many individual printers in favor of using network printers will definitely lead to savings in the long haul in terms of paper, ink and electricity costs. It is also not such a bad idea for the environment; such a move will definitely reduce the carbon footprint that the office leaves behind.

A flyer that is being circulated at the Bureau offices in Washington and Fort Worth, Texas, reportedly reads:

“Personal printers in BEP cost significantly more to use, operate and maintain than network printers. For a limited time, to incentivize you to voluntarily give up your active personal printer, BEP will share the savings with you. You will receive a gift card in the amount of $75 if you turn in an active personal printer.”

We are one with those, though, who raised their eyebrows at the method at which this effort is being done. The Bureau is reportedly basically buying these printers back – at $75 each!

Seriously, can these senior employees not afford to walk down the hall to where network printers are located? Seventy five dollars multiplied by five hundred-something just seems to be an awful lot to spend on something that, for all intents and purposes, you already own to begin with.

Is the agency so used to money (since they’re responsible for designing and producing them) that it becomes too easy to spend it?

Hi Prints,

I read a report by Ricoh recently about how European offices are failing to manage their paper trail efficiently. When I read the title of this post, I thought ‘Aha! Perhaps they’re getting it right on the other side of the pond!’

But perhaps not. Still, at least the Bureau’s heart is in the right place?

Yours,
