BEP Suspended $75-for-Printer Plan
The voices that reacted to the plan of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP), which we featured in a previous post, probably proved to be too loud that the office has reportedly scrapped the “cost-saving plan”.
This was announced through a press release from Rep. Darrell Issa (R-California), who is a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reforms.
It probably also helped that Issa stood up and took notice of their intended scheme. The Representative sent a letter to the Bureau asking them to justify the necessity of spending more than $40,000 of taxpayer dollars to get senior officers to return individually-issued printers instead of just asking for the printers back – plain and simple.
Issa reportedly wrote: “Your initiative may go down in history as one of the all time senseless uses of taxpayer dollars.”
It looks like there will be no such wastage, as the BEP has announced that it was no longer pushing through with the package. Spokeswoman for the Bureau Claudia Dickens was quoted as saying, “We have suspended any activities related to the printers. For now, everyone gets to keep their printer.”
Oops, wait a minute. What about the need for cost-cutting and savings? We are hoping that the Bureau still plans get the printers back and push through with the use of network printers instead of individual printers, mainly in the interest of contributing towards saving the environment.
