Counterfeit Money in Smaller Denominations!
We know that it is the season of joy and cheer, but it is also a time for defrauders and counterfeiters to do their thing. With so much cash exchanging hands, now may probably be one of the “best times” to try to circulate counterfeit money into the market.
We are ordinary citizens, you may wonder; what do we have to worry about? Businesses are the ones who receive and get paid with the cash, true, but remember that you may also fall prey by unwittingly receiving counterfeit bills when a business establishment also unknowingly provides you with fake bills for change.
Counterfeiters are well aware that big bills such as the hundreds and the fifties are constantly being watched for signs of counterfeiting, so more and more of them are producing counterfeit bills in smaller denominations which, more often than not, can go unnoticed.
The ClarionLedger.com, for instance, reports a case in Hinds County. The Sheriff’s Department was able to apprehend two men and two juveniles in a motel while in the act of producing fake $20 bills. The suspects were said to be printing out of an inkjet printer that was bought only earlier that day from an Office Depot and was in the process of spewing out $20 bills at the time that the police walked in. “The ink hadn’t even dried yet,” commented Lt. Richard Spooner. They were able to sequester a thousand dollars worth of $20 bills during the raid, and the currency has since been turned over to the Secret Service.
This was not, however, the only case of fake currency that the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department was looking into. There was also a case of someone trying to pass off fake twenties at a Chili’s in Jackson, as well as other cases at Venture Carwash and Applebees.
