Epson EC-01: Environment-Friendly Printing

The Epson EC-01 is unlike any printer you will encounter, at least for now. While it may look like your normal, run-of-the-mill printer, it possesses a significant difference that is coupled with what we could call ‘noble intentions’.

Epson EC-01The inkjet printer is the flagship product of Epson’s Environmental Vision 2050 program. Everything about it is testament to Epson’s efforts towards promoting environmental awareness.

When you purchase a unit, you will receive it encased in an unpainted and recycled cardboard box. As you set it up, you will leaf through a manual that is printed in recycled paper, and install it using a CD driver stored in an envelope made out of recycled paper. You will get to use the printer to print about 8,000 to 8,500 pages, and then its work is done.

Yes, that’s right. Its work is done because, unlike other printers where you replace the cartridges when the ink runs out, you simply up and take the EC-01 back to Epson, and you get a sort of ‘deposit’ as a rebate – an amount that has been embedded into the purchase price. This practice is reminiscent of buying only the contents of a Coca-Cola and returning the bottle in exchange for its deposit price. Then you simply pick up your new EC-01, and the cycle starts over.

This is one of the practices that Epson is introducing to the consumer market in an effort to strike a balance between caring for the environment and building the economy. Epson has been taking little steps towards doing something for the environment since the 1970s by introducing a closed system for harmful substances in wastewater treatment.

The company abides by a three-pronged Environmental Management System for all the stages of a product’s life cycle. It ensures that it develops products that are earth-friendly, impose fewer burdens on the environment and promote product recovery and recycling.

Now this is something that we have to see more of. More and more people are becoming aware of the environment and the effects that we have on it, I think that this a great way to start a printer that uses recycled paper fantastic.
